Mad Men

Work at the ad agency began this week and- I can't believe I am using this cliche- it has been an experience beyond my wildest dreams! It is only the end of my third day at work and already I am writing commercial scripts, attending client meetings and brainstorming sessions. I'd like to believe most interns (including some at this very agency) do not get to do as much cool stuff in their first week.

Mr. Youth is exactly how you would picture a young and hip advertising agency to be, complete with a carefree yet hardworking environment, the nicest co-workers anyone could ask for and an office that encourages openness, creativity and expression. When I began at the agency my primary concern was that I would not get along with my fellow interns or fit in with the mentality of the agency. Then I met the interns, and I met the people I would be working closely with and I was pleasantly surprised. The interns are cool, kind and intelligent people who share my interests, share a passion to succeed and are genuinely good people to spend time with. My co-workers are brilliant, hard-working and extremely encouraging.

My second day (my first real day) of work I attended a creative brief and ended up volunteering to write a script for a major company. At the end of second real day I had spent the day meeting about ranch dressing, joking with my fellow interns and the creative staff, and re-writing and editing my script over and over. The experience thus far has been extremely fun and extremely rewarding and I can only hope the rest of the summer goes this well.

For The Beatles today I thought I would choose one of the Beatles old 'Barn Burners' as John called them, to reflect the excitement I have felt since starting work at Mr. Youth. The lyrics don't really reflect any feelings I am having, but the mood of the song perfectly encapsulates how amazing I feel after completing each day so far. To understand what I mean you really should listen to the song... it really is a fun one.

"Ah kansas city
Going to get my baby back home
I'm going to kansas city
Going to get my baby back home
Well its a long long time too
My baby's been gone"
